Carboxymethyl Cellulose (often called CMC) is a widely used lubricant and thickening agent in pharmaceutical and healthcare products. In ophthalmology, it is commonly formulated as artificial tear eye drops to relieve dryness and irritation associated with Dry Eye Syndrome. It works by forming a protective, moisture-retaining layer over the surface of the eye, helping to keep it hydrated and reducing discomfort caused by environmental factors, prolonged screen use, or reduced tear production.
